Response to What Students Really Need to Hear: Article
High school isn't about giving up on something that you don't understand or getting good grades. Yes, maybe grades will help you with getting into school, but it's much more than that. It's about pushing through. Pushing through hardships, confusion, gossip, and sadness. It is for the moments. I think that is what the author of this article was trying to get across. Also, I think another main point he was trying to make was that it is important to never give up. Not on a math problem, not on a project, not anytime. Even when you feel as though no one is there to support you through it, hold yourself accountable and you will do wonderful things. In the end, high school teaches you how to deal with the circumstances of life.

To My Former Self:
Dear Freshman Self,
Don’t freak out. High school is not much different than middle school, it’s only a little bigger. These next four years that are in front of you will FLY by. You need to make sure that you take as many opportunities as you can. When you do that you will find a hidden passion for theater. You need to realize that you are more than just an athlete. You have so much more potential than being on a team. You are a beautiful girl with a bright future. You have the ability to do amazing things.
I’m going to tell you something that you will not enjoy hearing, not everyone is going to like you all the time. You will find yourself hanging out with guys rather than girls so that you will stay away from the drama. However, don’t seclude yourself too much. The friends that you believe to be your best friend will end up becoming almost a stranger. I do have one thing you need to know about the friend department: you are going to lose a lot of friends. But my advice is to not get depressed about it because through everything there will be one girl that is going to stand by your side through absolutely everything. And I can tell you right now that you already know who it is. Keep her. I mean she’s going to be your roommate in college.
Something else that you might not like is, not everyone in high school thinks the same about drugs and alcohol than you do. No matter what, I do not want you to succumb to the pressures of that kind of stuff. Hold your values above everything else. In the end, you will realize you’re not the only one and that it is worth it to wait.
Also, guys are dumb. You do not need them. Seriously, take mom and dad’s advice and wait until you are sixteen to date. If you do, I’m telling you right now you are going to save yourself from a lot of heartbreak and stupidity. However, for when you turn 16, don’t rush to have a boyfriend it’s stupid. You’re going to think that your best friend will be a perfect boyfriend but it will end up not working out. Wait a while and I promise by the end of high school you will find someone that you would have never thought of. And he will make you finally feel happy again.
In the end, do what will make you happy. High school is the time to experiment with a bunch of different stuff. Just stay smart and I promise you’ll turn out fine.
Good Luck,
Senior Elena

To My Future Self:
Dear Future Me,
I hope you have found your passion in life. I really do because sitting here, three months from graduating, you have absolutely no idea what you want to do with the rest of your life. I hope that whatever you have chosen is something that you love to do and are excited about. If not, find something else. I want to do something that I love and that I don’t mind getting up at the crack of dawn for (because you and I both know that if I’m anything like I am right now with getting up in the morning...something has GOT to happen).
Other than the job aspect of life, I hope that you have found the love of your life and that you are happy. Maybe with kids? Remember that no matter how hard marriage gets, you promised yourself back in high school that you will never EVER get a divorce. Remember how mom and dad were, strive everyday to love with a love that they share everyday. It looks perfect from my standpoint.
Most of all I hope that you do not regret doing anything in your past. You have come out of each setback in life stronger than ever before and there is no reason to stop now. Just try to live life for the people you love. Most of all, I hope that even though it has been years, you still try everyday to make Audra proud.
Love,
High School Elena
